The science behind the craft

Sweetgum Handbags are made by Kim - an ecologist who specializes in forest ecosystems and their interactions with the climate system. Every bag is 100% handsewn. Many feature images of tree rings, leaves, and reproductive structures of some of the most ecologically important eastern US tree species. Most of these images are all derived from original photographs, though a few are vintage naturalist illustrations in the public domain. The images are custom printed, and transferred to the bags by patchwork. Other designs make use of vintage fabrics sourced from local antique stores.

The bags are primarily made from cotton fabrics (including canvas, duck cloth, and linen). The larger designs include tote bags, messenger bags, and slouch bags that feature multiple pockets, including at least one zippered pocket big enough to fit a phone and other valuables. Smaller pieces include wristlets, cross-body bags, boxy cosmetic bags, zippered pouches, and fanny packs. These are unimposing but big enough to carry your essentials comfortably. Prices vary from one item to the next, with bigger bags in the range of $60-$100, and smaller bags in the range of $20-$50.

The bags are built to last. Kim has decades of experience in the craft, and still personally uses bags she made 15-20 years ago.
